Duncan Jones and David Bowie in 2009 (Jim Spellman/WireImage)The just-announced David Bowie biopic Stardust that’s scheduled to begin shooting in June apparently isn’t sanctioned by the late rock legend’s family and, contrary to previous reports, won’t feature his music.

Bowie’s son, filmmaker Duncan Jones, posted a Twitter message Thursday reacting to a Hollywood Reporter article that initially claimed Stardust’s soundtrack would include some music by David. Jones’ note reads, “Pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic… I would know.”

Duncan, whose directing credits include 2009’s Moon and 2016’s Warcraft, added about Stardust, “[A]s it stands, this movie won’t have any of [dad’s] music in it, & I can’t imagine that changing. If you want to see a biopic without his music or the [family’s] blessing, [that’s] up to the audience.”

ScreenDaily.com reported on Thursday that Stardust will focus on a 1971 trip that Bowie made to the U.S. that inspired him to created his Ziggy Stardust persona. David will be portrayed by Johnny Flynn, who has appeared in the Netflix series Lovesick and the National Geographic channel series Genius.

Stardust‘s cast also will include Jena Malone as Bowie’s first wife, Angie, and Marc Maron as his record label’s publicist. The movie will be directed by British filmmaker Gabriel Range, and is being produced by U.K. film company Salon Pictures.

Salon Pictures sent a statement of clarification to EW noting, “[T]his film is not a biopic, it is a moment-in-time film at a turning point in David’s life, and is not reliant on Bowie’s music.”

In addition, Salon co-founder Paul Van Carter tells EW.com that Stardust‘s soundtrack will feature “music from the period.”

He adds that the company “offered to…make [Bowie’s] estate involved in the creative process [but were told] there wouldn’t be approval from the estate.”
