ABC/Heidi GutmanLast summer, Green Day drummer Tre Cool revealed that the punk trio had been rehearsing their iconic 1994 album, Dookie, in full, leading to speculation that the band might be planning some kind of 25th anniversary celebration. Well, now we know why it never happened.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has revealed that the band did want to do something to celebrate 25 years of Dookie, but nothing came together.

“We wanted to think of something special to do but we couldn’t quite come up with anything,” Armstrong writes in an Instagram post.

Some of the ideas that Green Day apparently floated include performing Dookie in full at the pyramids of Egypt or Machu Picchu, or at a special concert in the Italian town of Viggiano, where some of Armstrong’s ancestors lived before immigrating to America.

But, as Armstrong puts it, none of those ideas “came to fruition.” However, he’s still leaving the door open for something Dookie-related to happen this year.

“Never despair,” Armstrong writes. “2019 still has time.”

Dookie celebrated its 25th anniversary on February 1. The album, which features the singles “Basket Case,” “Longview” and “When I Come Around,” is Green Day’s best-selling record, and has been certified Diamond by the RIAA for 10 million copies sold.
