'Bohemian Rhapsody' wins four Oscars, including Best Actor for Rami Malek

Queen’s Brian May and Adam Lambert open the Oscars broadcast; ABC/Craig SjodinMoviegoers have brought the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody fame and fortune and everything that goes with it — but Sunday night, the movie truly was the champion, winning four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Rami Malek.

Bohemian Rhapsody‘s four Oscars — which also included wins for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Film Editing — were the most of any film last night, including Best Picture winner Green Book, which took home three.

“I may not have been the obvious choice, but I guess it worked out,” said Rami Malek as he took the stage. In recent weeks, his performance — and utter transformation into iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury — had become the one to beat among Oscar prognosticators.

“Thank you, Queen. Thank you guys for being, for allowing me to be the tiniest part of your phenomenal, extraordinary legacy. I am forever in your debt,” he told the crowd.

Then, recalling how, as a child, he struggled with his identity just as Mercury did, Malek said, “Listen: We made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself. And the fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.”

“I am the son of immigrants from Egypt. I’m a first-generation American and part of my story is being written right now,” he added.

During the telecast, the movie was introduced by none other than Wayne and Garth — aka Mike Myers and Dana Carvey — who helped give the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” a second life in their 1992 movie comedy Wayne’s World. “We’re not worthy!” yelled Meyers as Wayne. “I’m gonna hurl!” added Carvey as Garth.

Oh, and did we mention that Queen themselves made Oscar history by being the first rock band to open the Academy Awards? The first thing viewers saw was guitarist Brian May jamming before current lead singer Adam Lambert kicked into “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”
