ABC/Randy HolmesMetallica is back on the road, which means it’s time for more of Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo‘s “doodles.”

In the middle of each show, the guitarist and bassist take the stage together for a short jam session, during which they usually perform a rough, just-for-fun cover in honor of a special occasion or the city in which they’re playing.

At a stop in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday, the duo covered Pink Floyd‘s “Run Like Hell” to celebrate David Gilmour‘s 73rd birthday.

And earlier in the week, when the metal legends played Wichita, Kansas, Hammett and Trujillo busted out an instrumental version of “Carry On Wayward Son” in honor of Topeka natives Kansas.

Metallica’s tour continues Saturday, March 9 in Louisville, Kentucky.
