Mike Mills & Robert McDuffie (Alex Irvin); Chuck Leavell (Terry Allen)

Mike Mills & Robert McDuffie (Alex Irvin); Chuck Leavell (Terry Allen)R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills is teaming up with longtime Rolling Stones touring keyboardist and musical director Chuck Leavell, plus acclaimed violinist Robert McDuffie, for a series of shows this fall.  The concerts will celebrate music made by artists from Mills’ home state of Georgia, as well as songs about the state.

The “A Night of Georgia Music” concerts are scheduled for September 29 in Atlanta; October 2 in Birmingham, Alabama; October 4 in Savannah, Georgia; and October 5 in Augusta, Georgia.

The shows will include tunes by R.E.M., The Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman, The B-52s, Ray Charles, James Brown, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Gram Parsons, pop/hip-hop duo Outkast and more. The concerts will also feature a performance of Mills’ 2016 classical piece, Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra, on which he collaborated with McDuffie, a childhood friend.

In a video promoting the concerts, Mike explains, “The plan is to have a set of two incredible musicians playing beautiful music either…from the state of Georgia or about the state of Georgia, and then we move into the concerto for the second half.”

He adds, “I’ve got a great idea for the encore that we’ll save as a surprise.”

Regarding Leavell taking part in the shows, Mills says, “If you can be the musical director for The Stones…you’ve got something going on. So, Chuck is amazing. As a person he’s wonderful, as a player he’s unbeatable.”
