Courtesy AXS TVWe’ve got our first look at the upcoming AXS TV show Paul Shaffer Plus One, which will feature the former Late Night with David Letterman bandleader chatting with iconic musicians and jamming on their best-known hits.

In a sneak peek of the first episode, Shaffer sits down with Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh to talk about the creation of one of the band’s signature hits, “Life in the Fast Lane.”  After Shaffer notes that the song has three people credited as writers — Walsh, Don Henley and Glenn Frey — he asks how it came together.

“I had this lick that I played that I would warm up for a show with,” Walsh explains, demonstrating the song’s famous opening riff. “It’s a coordination exercise between your right and left hand.”

“I was just playing, warming up for the show, and Glenn comes busting into my dressing room and says, ‘What the hell’s that!?’” Walsh recalls. “And I said, ‘I don’t know, it’s just a lick I warm up with.’ And he says, ‘That’s an Eagles song, dude!’”

Paul Shaffer Plus One premieres Sunday, September 15 at 8 p.m. ET.
