Credit: DH LovelifeNeil Young has recorded several albums over the years that he has decided not to release for various reasons, among them a collection of acoustic tunes from 1974 and ’75, called Homegrown.

Now, the folk-rock legend has revealed that Homegrown finally will officially see the light of day in 2020.

“Homegrown will be our first release in 2020, sounding great in vinyl — as it was meant to be,” Young revealed in a recent post on his Neil Young Archives website, adding, “Made in the mid-nineteen seventies!…A record full of love lost and explorations. A record that has been hidden for decades. Too personal and revealing to expose in the freshness of those times.”

Neil also reports that the album was put together by “painstakingly restor[ing] the analog masters.”

He points out, “We were told that this was impossible now, the Homegrown tapes were too damaged to use; we had to use Digital. We didn’t agree.”

The message is accompanied by a video of frequent Young co-producer John Hanlon in the studio pointing out that he was working with the analog tapes without using any digital equipment.

Young describes Homegrown as the “unheard bridge between [1972’s] Harvest and [1978’s] Comes a Time.” Several songs originally recorded during the Homegrown sessions wound up appearing on subsequent young albums, including “Little Wing,” “Star of Bethlehem,” and the title track.
