ABC/Image Group LATalk about a “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”: the film adaptation of Green Day‘s 2004 opus American Idiot is no longer in the works.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong revealed the sad news in an interview with NME, simply saying that the project has been “pretty much scrapped.”

In 2016, Armstrong announced that a film version of American Idiot, which had been previously turned into a Tony-winning Broadway musical, had received a “green light from HBO.”

“It’s definitely all systems go at the moment,” he told NME at the time. He added that he was set to reprise his role as the character St. Jimmy, which he played intermittently during the musical’s Broadway run.

In a subsequent interview, Armstrong described the film as “surreal,” and that it “might offend people.”

While the American Idiot movie is no longer happening, Green Day still has a full plate for 2020. The trio just last week released their new album, Father of All…, and they’ll hit the road this summer with Fall Out Boy and Weezer on the Hella Mega Tour.
