The Michigan Academy of Family Physicians is calling for more primary care doctors in the state.

Western Michigan University program director for family medicine residency Dr. Kristi Vanderkolk says we need more family physicians.

We are facing a shortage of family medicine physicians that is going to affect the health of Michiganders,” Vanderkolk said. “We know that people do better when they have access to primary care, and Michigan is well-poised to be a leader in family medicine and the care provided to its citizens by increasing the number of primary care physicians to Michiganders everywhere.”

Vanderkolk says we also need to improve the diversity of the primary care workforce.

This is Family Medicine Week.
